Selbsttest oder Labortest compares a test bought off the shelf with a sample drawn in the pharmacy and analysed in an accredited laboratory. Each answers a different question, one narrow and immediate, the other broad and standardised.

Selbsttest oder Labortest is the question a customer actually asks at the counter. On one side is a test bought from the shelf and performed at home. On the other is a sample taken in the pharmacy and analysed in an akkreditierten Labor. They are not competing versions of the same thing. They answer different questions, and the useful reply describes the question each one is built for.

A Selbsttest is designed for one marker and a yes or no style answer, or a single value read on the spot. It is quick, it needs no appointment, and for a narrow question it can be entirely adequate. A glucose reading taken at home over months is genuinely informative, and there is no reason for a pharmacy to talk anyone out of a product that fits their question. What it cannot do is widen. It covers what the strip or the device covers and nothing beyond that.

A laboratory analysis works from a drawn sample and can run a broad panel from the same tubes, which is why a customer who wants a picture across several systems ends up there. The second difference is standardisation. A laboratory runs its methods under a documented quality system, takes part in external testing, and states which method produced each value alongside a Referenzbereich belonging to that method. That is what makes a value from March and a value from September comparable to each other, provided both came from the same laboratory and the same method. Two home tests from different manufacturers, or a home test held against a laboratory value, do not sit on one line in that way.

Neither route is more accurate than the other in the abstract, and any claim in that direction is worth distrusting. The honest framing is what a result can be compared against. A self test answers today. A standardised laboratory value can be placed next to the last one and the next one. The same reasoning applies to a Schnelltest performed in the pharmacy, or to a Point of Care Test run on a bench device, both of which are fast and narrow by design. In every case the pharmacy hands over the result and a physician interprets it.
