Assistants are an official shortage occupation
The German employment agency classifies medical assistants as a shortage occupation in its 2025 analysis, so the person who would run a routine draw is the person you cannot hire. Across the EU the shortfall was about 1.2 million doctors, nurses and midwives in 2022, measured against the staffing needed for universal health coverage.
Administration is a large part of the week
In a 2024 survey of more than 1,000 medical assistants for the Felix Burda Stiftung, about 68 percent said that more than 40 percent of their weekly hours is organisational work.
Routine check ups are still increasing
German panel doctors billed 10.1 million general health checks in 2024, which is 1.1 million more than in 2023, and those appointments are mostly routine. Preventive testing is at the same level across Europe, where 55.3 percent of people aged 15 and over had their cholesterol measured by a health professional in the year before the survey.
