Kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn

In one sentence

Kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn is the notional salary an owner should count for their own work before calling the pharmacy profitable. It appears in no ledger of an owner run pharmacy, because the owner is paid out of whatever remains.

An employed pharmacist appears on the payroll every month. The owner does not. The owner's own working week is paid out of whatever is left once every other cost has been met, which means the accounts of an owner run pharmacy contain a full time job that is never priced. Kalkulatorischer Unternehmerlohn is the correction for that gap. It is the salary the pharmacy would have to pay an employee to do the work the owner does, entered as a cost even though no money leaves the account.

The number is uncomfortable, and a lot of owners have never sat down and worked it out. The effect of including it is arithmetic rather than moral. Once the owner's own work carries a price, part of what looked like profit turns out to have been wages, and only the remainder is a return on the capital and the risk. Nothing about the pharmacy has changed. What has changed is the standard the result is being measured against.

This is why it does not show up on its own. The Betriebsergebnis in a standard BWA is struck before any notional owner salary, because a BWA reports payments that actually happened. A pharmacy can therefore show a positive Betriebsergebnis month after month and still not be covering the owner's own labour at a market rate. The same holds for Umsatzrendite. The ABDA Apothekenwirtschaftsbericht published on 5 May 2026 put the Umsatzrendite of German pharmacies at 4,2 percent for 2025, down from 4,4 percent in 2024, and reported that 33 percent of pharmacies showed a pre-tax operating result below 100.000 euro while 7 percent made a loss. Those results are calculated before any owner wage, so a thin percentage and an unpaid owner tend to travel together.

The Personalkostenquote has the same blind spot, because it measures paid staff cost against Rohertrag and the owner is not on that list. Adding a notional owner salary raises the real cost of every hour the owner spends behind the counter, which is exactly what matters when a new service is on the table. If the owner is the only person who can run it, the hours have a price even when no invoice records them.

No figure is given here, because a defensible one depends on the size of the pharmacy, the region and what a comparable employed position pays locally. Setting it, and deciding how it is treated for tax, depends on the legal form of the business and belongs with the Steuerberater before it goes into any calculation.
