In short

This test screens for syphilis by looking for both IgG and IgM antibodies against Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes the infection. It reports a simple qualitative result: antibodies present or not.

IgM tends to appear early in an infection and IgG later, so checking both gives a broad window for detecting exposure.

Inflammation & Immune
Reviewed against DGKL reference practice.

Why test this?

Syphilis can be treated easily with antibiotics once it is found, but it can stay silent and cause harm if missed. A combined IgG and IgM screen is a sensitive way to detect exposure across different stages of infection.

A non-reactive result is reassuring. A reactive result needs confirmatory testing to establish whether the infection is active and at what stage.

What is a normal result?

Aniva reads your result against research-backed ranges, not just the lab's wide normal. The reference shown below is specific to this biomarker.

This test is reported qualitatively. The expected result for someone without syphilis is Negative or Non-reactive.

ResultMeaning
Non-reactive (negative)No treponemal IgG or IgM antibodies detected
ReactiveNeeds confirmatory testing before any diagnosis

A reactive screen is not a diagnosis. Cutoffs are set by the assay and may vary by laboratory.

Ranges are guidance and vary by lab and assay, aligned with DGKL practice. Always read your result against your own lab's reference interval.

What insights will this test give you?

You learn whether treponemal IgG or IgM antibodies are present. A negative result means none were found at this time. A reactive result leads to confirmatory testing, including non-treponemal tests, to determine whether the infection is current or past.

What can affect this result?

What can skew the result

Antibodies take time to rise, so very early infection can be missed. Treponemal antibodies often persist for life after treatment, so a reactive result does not by itself mean active disease. Rare false-reactive results are possible. Fasting does not affect the result.
